At Sony CSL – Paris we will seek new and stimulating imaginaries that center on the well-being of Humanity and of the Planet.

We are living in a pivotal time in which we face environmental and societal challenges. Sony CSL – Paris is committed to working on technologies that ensure we shift towards more creative, democratic, inclusive and sustainable societies.

As a Computer Science laboratory, we rely on Machine Learning in all of our work. AI systems are the new operating systems that will run most of our applications. We will harness them in novel ways to assist people, serving as tools for creativity, communication and scientific progress, while assuring these systems are trustworthy and based on morally acceptable value systems.

The most important asset of CSL - Paris,
is its members.

We are a small, bottom-up and people-driven research group. Most researchers have a background in computer science and combine their skills with their field of interest to tackle multi-disciplinary research questions. Working at CSL requires a healthy level of autonomy and a solid conviction to accomplish the proof-of-concepts and communicate the results. We try to maintain a dynamic research environment in which the researchers can give feedback and collaborate freely.

Tokyo Research

Tokyo Research aims to generate a wave of co-creation, where individuals with diverse expertise and backgrounds collaborate to created synergy, shaping a future filled with novel and inspiring experiences.

Kyoto_Pic

Kyoto Research

Kyoto Research, explores the theme of “fullness,” encompassing values such as mental well-being and public mindfulness. In Kyoto, a city where tradition and modernity coexist, research is being conducted to examine the meaning of “fullness” for both individuals and society, while seeking new avenues for technological development that benefit all.

Rome Research

Rome Research focuses on expanding human potential and developing sustainable solutions to contemporary societal challenges, approaching research from the perspective of safe collaboration between humans and machines. In Italy, a country rich excellence and creativity, we integrate information science, sustainability, artificial intelligence, and art, to drive innovative and creative research.

Transboundary Research

Transboundary Research seeks to drive groundbreaking research as a decentralized organization. Rather than being rooted in specific regions or cultures, it seeks to adopt a perspective that transcends diverse values, with the goal of pursuing more fundamental research.

CSL – Paris’ goal is to establish new fields of research or develop new visions that contribute to society. We focus on going from “0 to 1”: starting from an initial, novel idea, we aim to reach a first proof-of-concept. Being a small group, we must combine off-the-beaten-path ideas while maintaining a rigorously scientific approach, and find a sweet spot between being original, having impact, working with limited resources, developing a vision, and remaining concrete.

This exploration requires a certain level of openness and flexibility, to be able to work with third parties, such as academic institutions, public instances, non-for-profit organisations, artists, professionals, and other companies. We have a long history of participating in Europe Research projects, and we are always open to discuss new research collaborations with academic and private partners. We seek to collaborate with stakeholders as needed to anchor our proof-of-concepts in real needs.
