About Us
Sony Computer Science Laboratories (Sony CSL) is the leading-edge organization that works to create new research areas and paradigms, as well as new technologies and businesses for the common social good.
When founded in Japan in 1988, Sony CSL focused on fundamental research in computer systems, including operating systems, the Internet, and user interfaces. As the organization evolved, its focus shifted to exploring ways to use computers in diverse domains such as systems biology, econophysics and artificial intelligence.
In 1996 the Japanese experience gave birth to Sony CSL – Paris, with its four main research areas: language, music, creativity and sustainability. Starting as a small research cell the laboratory quickly evolved and it is now in full expansion. The laboratory uses the tools of complexity science, data science and artificial intelligence to investigate fundamental issues in different areas such as the understanding and creation of music, language and communication systems, sustainability and the dynamics of innovation and creativity. Sony CSL – Paris recently celebrated its 25th anniversary with an Open House hosted in the Maker Faire European Edition in Rome.
Each Sony CSL researcher sets an ambitious goal and approaches it systematically using Open Systems Science, publishing his or her findings along the way. We believe that the best results are produced by individuals acting independently, or as members of an ad hoc team, and that a laboratory should offer the best possible conditions to support such activities. At Sony CSL, value is assessed by the degree to which achievements are perceived to contribute to the future of humanity and our planet, to new science and technology, to industrial progress, and to product development.
This is the environment in which our researchers work for the global good, seeking to use their findings to change the world in which we live. The benefits of this research are returned to society through the activities of the Sony group companies or commercialized through in-house business proposals. Studying extremely diverse realms of knowledge, and motivated to make a meaningful contribution, Sony CSL researchers inspire each other to keep exploring new domains, new concepts, new business areas and new technologies.
