Helmoltz Munich and MPI for Biological Cybernetics Tubingen

Alireza is a postdoctoral researcher at Helmholtz Munich (Eric Schulz’s lab) and MPI for Biological Cybernetics (Peter Dayan’s lab; in Tübingen). Before moving to Germany, he completed his Ph.D. in Computer and Communication Sciences at EPFL under the supervision of Wulfram Gerstner. His research interest lies at the intersection of computational neuroscience, cognitive science, and machine learning, focusing on developing computational models of learning and decision-making in the brain.

The ''why" and "what" of curiosity: a reinforcement learning perspective

Curiosity is a fundamental drive of human behavior, yet the questions ‘Why are humans curious?’ and ‘What sparks their curiosity?’ have been among the central but unresolved puzzles of neuroscience and psychology in the past decades. In this talk, I will present a series of theoretical and experimental studies exploring how intrinsically motivated reinforcement learning provides new insights into these questions — paving the way toward a unified understanding of curiosity in humans and artificial intelligence.
